Well, it was definitely a tough day at the office for all our Blackstone teams involved in the finals. Six games, six losses. Not a good outcome for the Club in contesting the finals race. Good news is that our Senior Men’s Division 1 and Senior Women’s Division 1 teams live to fight another day.
U9 Prelim-finals
Blackstone United suffered the first loss of the day with a 4 -0 loss to St. Catherines Blacks. Fantastic effort to make it this far into the finals and better luck next year.
U10 Prelim-finals
Blackstone United came up against the Brisbane Valley team that knocked out the Blackstone Dragons team last week. It was a tight contest and looked like it was heading for extra time when Brisbane Valley broke through to go up 2-1. Blackstone United didn’t give up and kept battling but couldn’t find the back of the net. Just before fulltime, Brisbane Valley picked up their third goal to seal the match. Great effort from a new team and they can look forward to further success next year.
U14 Semi-final
With a good start and picking up an early goal, it looked like the U14s were going to buck the trend for the juniors. Blackstone should’ve gone to a 2-0 lead with a golden opportunity missed. However, St Cats fought back with two quick goals in the first half to go into the lead 2-1. The second half was a tight contest with opportunities for both teams to score. Late in the match, a shot on goal resulted in a high bouncing ball that beat the St Cats keeper but just went over the crossbar. The score remained 2-1 at the finish of the match. Great effort for a team that finished last in Division 1 last year (after going straight from Division 3 the previous year) and they are sure to finish in the top four again next year.
Senior Women’s Division 1
This champion side took on North Pine Baptist and went down in a close match 3-2. This was their first loss for the season. They get a second chance against Raceview in the Prelim-final with 2 wins and a draw in the regular season.
Senior Women’s Division 3
After losing all three regular season rounds to St Cats, it was belief in themselves that would see Blackstone come through. After a tough battle, Blackstone went down fighting 1-0. Fantastic effort from this team of ladies and I’m sure finals will be calling again in 2017.
Senior Men’s Division 1
A close match ensued with our premier men’s side going down to Brisbane Athletic 4-3. They get a second chance against Raceview in the Prelim-final with 2 wins and a draw in the regular season.
Good luck to our remaining two teams competing in preliminary finals matches this coming weekend. If you get the chance, go and support our teams, I’m sure they will appreciate the support and it might be the difference to get them across the line.
