After a week off due to Brisbane Valley forfeiting their home match (found out later that they only had nine players, little did they know we had the same!), we took to the field at home against Logan. We were expecting a tough game as they are a similar squad to U14’s last year.
We welcomed two new players to our team, one local, one international. After a transfer from Kenya, yes Kenya, Africa, Isaac S joined Blackstone and from his efforts at training, looks to be a good fit for our squad. Arby (mates with Tim) also joined the team and will give us more options in the midfield or defence. With the bonus of now having 12 registered players for the team (one sub, a luxury), however we were dealt a blow on the morning of the match with Buster coming down with the manflu and holed up in bed. We still had to call on a couple of the U14 boys to help us out.
Will was keen and confident to take on the keeper role (big thank-you from Jonas) and we took to the field. However, it didn’t take long for Logan to get onto the score sheet with a goal at the 3’mark after Blackstone was unable to clear the ball from within the 18 yard box. However, Blackstone bounced back quickly. With Blair playing up front with Isaac S, at the 6’mark, he provided a nice ball through to Isaac who finished off with his first goal for the Club. The game remained tight until just before half time when we worked the ball out from the back up the left wing. Ash received the ball and then gave a cracking pass to Isaac S who cut back inside and then outside the 18 yard box took a shot on goal straight into the top right corner. Beautiful goal. Blackstone went into the sheds 2-1 up.
After half time, Jeremiah and Tim combined well for Tim to take a shot on goal but the Logan keeper denied us the chance. Logan was then able to counter up through the middle and behind our backline to bring up their second goal to even up the score. Jonas gave it his all to deny the goal but no luck (Will was on the pitch for the second half). The game seesawed for the rest of the match. Jonas pulled off a couple of cracking saves to deny Logan a third goal. Just when it was looking like a draw, Isaak G picked the ball up in the middle of the ground and went on a penetrating run. Beating a number of Logan players, he found space around 30 yards out and shot low and hard for goal. The speed of the ball beat the keeper and Blackstone took the lead 3-2. The referee called fulltime basically off the ensuing kick-off. Big thank-you to Ash and Jordan from the U14’s who all played extremely well given they had already played a game and backed up in our game. Both players looked very much at home in our team. Ash had a valuable assist when Isaac picked up his brace.
