With a massive day planned for a third of the team post the game, we travelled to Chermside to take on a team we have never faced before. The coach and manager had a shocker. The coach changed vehicles and left the kit, match ball and practice ball in the other car. The manager parked next to Field 1 but that was cricket field 1 not football field 1 and proceeded to walk what seemed like 3000km to the correct field. To make matters worse, we were down three of our normal players; Isaac (injured), Isaak (suspended) and Arby (holidays) so again, U14’s to the rescue. This week we had Lachie helping us out but it only gave us ten for the match. Isaac was keen as mustard to rip off his cast to join the boys but better to let the broken wrist heal.
With one of our boys also missing the kick off, we started with nine. The game plan from Nundah was clear from the outset, punt it long on the counter attack. This paid dividends at the 7’mark with a long ball catching our backline asleep. Buster, as he does, came out to close down the shot but the striker was able to lift the ball over Busters arms. Nundah into the lead 1 nil. At the 15’mark, Lachie played a ball through to Tim in the midfield. With time and space, he blasted a shot from about 30yards out, over the keepers outstretched arms and into the back of the net. We were back into the game and now had 10 players on the park. The boys were moving the ball well with our passing game and a lovely interchange between Jeremiah, Tim and Mitch resulted in a shot on goal but saved by their keeper. Half time beckoned with the game poised at 1 all.
In the second half, it was all Blackstone. However we could not find the back of the net. Raid after raid but we could not score. Nundah’s defence held firm. Nundah had a few counter attack opportunities but they were snuffed out with either good keeping or defensive cover.
Big thank-you goes to Lachie who was outstanding in the wide mid-field role and then at left back. Also thanks to the Nundah coach who lent us the red bibs for the match. First time ever the coach has gone to the game and no jerseys.
Full time result Nundah-Wavell 1 drew Blackstone 1.
