We travelled to Boonah on Saturday to take on a side that we know is filled with talent. We were short on numbers across both the Div 1 and Div 2 teams and so took to the field with nine players and only the coach on the bench. However, we were confident that we could get the job done. It didn’t take too long to see the quality of the Blackstone team shine through. With an attacking movement up the right flank, we took a shot on goal which was saved by the keeper however, JT swooped onto the loose ball to notch up our first goal in the 3’mark. This was a good confidence boost to our team early in the match. The goal had a hint of offside but the centre referee and assistant referee awarded the goal. With a strong breeze and the slope of the pitch favouring Boonah in the first half, their intent was clear in playing long balls in behind our backline however, the Blackstone boys were up to the challenge. With Buster sweeping high, the backline of Tim, JB and Ash nullified each and every Boonah attack. We had a couple of other opportunities to score in the first half with the keeper making a great save to deny Isaak S a goal at the 30’ mark. Blackstone went into a well-deserved half time break 1 nil up but dominating possession and field position.
We had Isaak G arrive just before half time to lift our numbers to 10 on the pitch. The extra set of legs made all the difference in the second half. We also had the advantage of the breeze and the downhill run of the pitch. At the 45’ mark, Shoshonie made a run from the right flank towards the near post. On his less favoured foot, he shot at goal and taking a deflection off a defender, beating the Boonah keeper. Blackstone now are up 2 nil. We captilised quickly with the best goal of the match not two minutes later. With lovely ball movement and simple wall passes, the midfield pairing of JT and Shoshonie cut through the heart of the Boonah defence with Shoshonie popping up in behind their backline to calmly slot the finish past the keeper. Blackstone now are up 3 nil. To Boonah’s credit, they kept pushing and finally were rewarded at the 59’ mark. They were able to get outside our tiring backline and put a cross in behind the defensive line. Buster was able to intercept the cross and parry the ball away but only as far as a Boonah forward who quickly put the ball into the back of the net. Scoreline back to 3-1. Boonah attempted a similar play again however, the ball was safely cleared by Ash who intercepted the cross before it reached Buster. Blackstone largely controlled the remainder of the match to ensure a very solid win under trying circumstances. Excellent effort from all on the pitch today but particularly from JT, Shoshonie and Tim. Ahbi was excellent in the CDM role today and Isaak and Jordan made constant dangerous runs that were not always rewarded. Very proud of the boys. Special thanks to Toni (Isaak G’s mum) who made the dash from Wynnum just so Isaak could play in the second half. The commitment from our parents is fantastic and we appreciate all that they do.
