We opened the season with a home game against Whitehill. This is their first year in O40’s having previously played in O30s Division 2. We played each other in a preseason friendly with Blackstone notching up a win but now points are on the line, it’s a new game and it showed. Whitehill played with a much improved structure and the game was a tight contest in the first half with Blackstone having the best of the chances but could not capitalise. We went into the half time break nil all.
We spoke at half time about going out in the second half with much more intent and dominating the opposition.
The second half commenced and Blackstone pressed early. This paid dividends with 5 or 6 corners in a row, alternating either side. This pressure at their goal mouth finally paid off with Big Adam curling one in at the back post, beating their keeper and defenders to notch up our first goal. Blackstone into the lead 1 nil. Our next goal resulted in playing the ball out from the back. The play moved up our right flank to Steve who slotted the ball in behind the Whitehill backline for Len to slot past the keeper. Now our lead is 2 nil. Whitehill kept pressing forward but Blackstone continued to snuff out each attack and they didn’t really put pressure on goal. The referee finally blew the fulltime whistle and we start the season with a win.
Special thanks to Darren Charles Photography for taking cracking photos on the night (unfortunately injured) and look forward to having you back on the pitch.
Better start to the season than 2018 with a clean sheet and three points. Bring on the next game after Easter.
